Back after a long time

It has been quite a long time since I wrote my last post. I was quite involved with the class assignments and office work, at the same time (surprise!!).
But even after so many challenges, studying and work at the same time is fun.

Ok, now, continuing which subjects were introduced to us in the lectures.

1. Management Accounting: Accounting for the management team of the company, detailing the internals like cost, price, budgets etc. We were given a group assignment with few "Case Studies", which we had to submit as a hard-copy. The assignment was fun and lots to learn.

2. Managing People In Organizations: This subject mainly helps understand how to manage "oneself" and others. Plus it introduces concepts like perspective of vision, bounded awareness, mirror neurons etc. When I first looked at the subject topic I thought, ewww, such a boring subject it would be. The professor made the subject quite interesting. We had an individual assignment for "Reflecting ourself, finding strengths and designing ways to use the strengths".

3. Business Law and IP: This subject was quite interesting and informative regarding patents, copyrights, trademarks etc. regarding the process, implications and things to be careful about.

4. Taxation: This subject is on-going as of today. This is mainly about indirect taxation and understanding the basics for the same. The professor is a highly experienced person in this field and explains things in a lucid manner. He is also covering some aspects about GST (probably will be implemented in future).

5. Corporate Finance: This is a very interesting subject for me. It mainly covers understanding the methods and techniques to manage your company finance, understanding the "time value of money", taking investment decisions and many other things. The professor makes the subject more lively by involving the students in discussions and relating the "company finance" to "personal finance". This subject is going to be with me for years to come.

Also, we were provided details of the exams that will be conducted in the coming one-week classroom lectures (13June to 18June).

Wish me best of luck for the exams !!

See you soon :)

The "First" Assignment

Like I mentioned in my previous blog post, we had lectures on Fridays.
There were 4 lectures each day, starting from 8 am to 1.30 pm.
After lunch, some students would go to their office for work, some would go home to work, some would use the campus WIFI for working (I was one of them) and a few did not work at all (on that day, they would work next day).

Anyways, we had our lectures on OS&D (organization structures and design). The prof explains things pretty good, but you need to read the books to understand more.

Also, we completed with our Financial Accounting lectures and we were given a group assignment(which would be evaluated). The assignment was:-
1. Prof would assign an industry to each group of ~10 students
2. The group needs to pick up a company from the industry and download its Annual Reports for last 3-4 years.
3. The group has to prepare a Balance sheet and P/L (Profit and Loss) statement for the 4 years merged into one.
4. Then based on what was taught, ratios had to be found out.
5. An analysis was needed to be done based on the ratios. For example, is debt increasing or average payable period decreasing etc.
6. A presentation would need to be prepared to give some idea about the industry, company. its balance sheets, P/L statements, ratios calculated and analysis/summary/recommendations.
7. This ppt would be presented in front of the class, and the prof (of course).
8. Questions may be asked at the end of the presentation.

Grading:-
1. The prof would grade each group.
2. Plus each group would grade other groups.
The average grade of (1 and 2) would be assigned to the group.

This was a nice learning experience to understand each and every industry. As well as, try out some presentation skills.

But "abhi to baas shuruvat hai" (it's just the beginning).
Lots of more assignments and learning to come.

IIMB also organizes nice seminars by inviting distinguished personalities. I had a chance to attend a few of such seminars as well.

Back to School - Week1

Day1

And finally, the day arrived!! Yes, it was 4th January 2016. We were supposed to report at 8.45 am. I got up early feeling excited and nervous.
My PG room being just a few minutes away, I started from home at 8.15 (just not to be late on the first day). I reached the main gate and showed the security guard a printout of my "Joining Instructions" letter (though probably not required). The guard told me to go to a particular building. After walking for around 2 minutes, I reached the entrance of the building, and then a few minutes walk took me to the classroom.
Few students had already reached the classroom. Our places were preassigned, in the ascending order of our First Name, mine being the last :). At our seats were kept some books, a folder with a schedule for the first week and details of the professors, an IIM-B pen and an IIM-B bag.
At sharp 9.00am, by sharp I mean really sharp, course directors profs. S Raghunath  and Chetan Subramanian gave us a brief about the course, what is expected from us and how much effort would be required from our side. He also mentioned that punctuality is to the "p" and time to the "t" at IIM-B, and latecomers are not entertained by some professors. Also, he mentioned that assignments are not to be copied as that was a serious "sin" in IIM-B.
After some minutes, we went for a photo session. The photographer was pretty funny, shifting people from one row to the another for about 5-10 mins. Then finally, he took some photos.
After the photo session, we had our first breakfast at IIM-B. Needless to mention, the breakfast was awesome. Eating more helps you sleep during the lectures (though I do not recommend overeating since the lectures are pretty interesting).
After breakfast, we had our first session, by prof SK. He was awesome simply awesome. The examples he gave were like diamonds that you should wear all along your life. His lectures continued till before the lunch break.
We had an awesome lunch (with a sweet dish) every day and lots of things on the menu.
After lunch, we had one session each on Stress Management and Relaxation Techniques. The main thing that I could remember was that people of my age group can afford to get a complete sleep in 6 hours. Only after an age of 60 or something, you need 7 hours of sleep.

And the day ended awesome, with making new acquaintances!!

Day2-5
Rest of the week was almost a similar routine, with only the sessions taught being different.
I used to reach at around 7.45 to have morning breakfast, after which the classes used to start at 9 am(sharp). Then we used to have 1 session for 75 minutes followed by a tea/coffee break. After that another session for 75 mins, followed by juice break. Then another 75 minutes session with lunch to follow. Then after lunch another 75 mins session after which we had tea/coffee break with something to eat. Then the last session would be for 75 mins and that was the end of the day.

The subjects that were taught in the first week were:-
1. General Commercial Knowledge
2. Financial Accounting
3. Macro Economics

All the professors were good, with some being simply excellent. The subjects are taught at a high level and students are expected to read thoroughly by themselves.

We had few group activities done in the week and it was a good experience.

Also, we got our IIM-B email id and access to the institute's WiFi.

Next.. sessions on Fridays.
